Determining Level of VA Disability and Compensation
The way the VA determines the level of disability and compensation is by what they call rating exams primarily. Typically, they will send a veteran to an evaluation by a physician — or if it’s a mental health issue a psychologist or psychiatrist — who will give the VA a report that touches on various criteria about the severityof the particular condition, and depending on the nature of the condition the rating can be anywhere from as low as zero percent up to a hundred percent.
Typically, many claims are rated in the 10 to 30 percent range but more severe claims, particularly claims involving mental health or serious injuries, may be rated as anywhere from 60 to 100 percent.
